Government First Grade College, Kundagol a town of historical importance located about 20 kms away from the commercial city Hubli. The name of the town Kundagol, has been derived from the Kannada word “Kumudagala Kola” which means land of Lotus Ponds. In ancient Karnataka, this region comprised of 300 villages with its administrative centre being Kundagol. The province was administered by the Kalyani Chalukya Emperors Someshwar-I and Vikramaditya-VI. Kundagol is also famous for its rich temples built during Kalyani Chalukya dynasty in 11th century A.D. One of them is the “SHAMBULINGESHWAR TEMPLE” built by Kalyani Chalukya Emperors Someshwar-I along with the famous sculptor Jakanacharya. The land of Kundagol also produced many well-known artists like Hidustani Musician pandit Rambhav Kundagolkar popularly known as Pandit Savai Gandharva a disciple of Pandit Ustad Abdul Karimkhan. The Nadagir Wade of Kundagol is kwown for patronizing Hindustani Music of modern times which has produced many celebraties like Dr. Gangu Bai Hanagal and Bharat Ratna Pandit Bheemsen Joshi. Kundagol is also witness to communal harmony and teacher -pupil bonding (Guru- Shishya Parampare) through Guru Govind Bhat and Saint Shishunala Shareef . The Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Karnataka, with an aim to provide opportunities to rural students to attain higher education started 186 colleges at a streach all over Karnataka during the year 2007-08, one among them is the SSBSSMPH Government First Grade College, Kundagol. The land for the college was donated by Shri Shatasthala Bhrami Shitikantheshwara Shivacharya Maha Swamigalu, Panchagraha Hiremath in memory of his Guru Shri Shatasthala Bhrami Shiddalinga Shivacharya Maha Swamigalu, Panchagraha Hiremath. The college made its begining in rented building of APMC Yard during the academic year 2007-08 with 45 students on its rolls for the B.A. Course and B.Com. Course was later introduced in the year 2010-11.Within a span of seven years the college started functioning in its own new building and as of now it has a student streangth of 225 with well experienced teaching staff. The college is affiliated to Karnatak University,Dharwad which is 40km away from kundgol.


Naipunya Nidhi

With the intent of taking this skill development programme to a new level, a novel initiative titled ‘Naipunya Nidhi’ was conceptualised during 2013-14. This program is aimed at crafting new opportunities, improving the self-image and imparting employability skills to the students, a sizeable number of who are from the disadvantaged socio-economic background. Naipunya Nidhi is an inclusive training module for all students of undergraduate program. Naipunya Nidhi has training programmes rich in content, delivered using novel teaching tools like EDUSAT.

The first year students are trained in communication English. Conversational and writing skills are honed through intense training in form and functions of the language.
• The second year students are trained in social skills and Indian culture. This training template aims at helping the students develop self-respect, healthy relationship, emotional intelligence, goal-setting and time management, leadership qualities and creates awareness about values and ethics.
•Employability skills are imparted to the final year students under the NSDC (National Skill Development Council) approved ‘STAR’ (Standard Training Assessment and Reward) scheme. NSDC is a Government of India body that strives for bridging the skill gap through skill training and upgradation. The trainers of the STAR scheme are NSDC empanelled partners. This program trains students in high market-demand sector skills like BFSI, IT/ITeS, Retail, Telecom, Gems and Jewellery, Health care etc. The variety of skills dealt with in this training, enhances the job prospects and is expected to lower the unemployment rates.
•As a collaborative venture of DCE and Global Shapers World Economic Forum, a Corporate Leadership Training Program was launched for PG students of Government Colleges in Bangalore in 2012-13. To reach out to wider section of students, this training is being made accessible to 5000 PG/UG students in 2013-14. This training program helps students develop ‘T’-shaped competencies and deepen their technical, professional, soft and leadership skills.
•DCE partnering with Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India has undertaken a pilot project for training students of 2 Government Colleges of Bangalore in entrepreneurship. This 6 days training is provided at zero cost.

Edusat

GSAT-3 satellite, more commonly known as EDUSAT, was launched on 20th September 2004 by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). This ambitious project was mainly intended to meet the demand for satellite communication based distance education system for the country. It was aimed at providing connectivity to schools, colleges and other academic institutions. The program is primarily meant to support non-formal education. Due to failure of EDUSAT (GSAT-3) satellite in March-2010 and in order to provide continuity of services, ISRO allocated satellite bandwidth to all Tele-Education networks in INSAT-4CR Ch#2, Ch#4 and Ch#12 (total 96 MHz) with 5 networks operating on time sharing basis

Sanchi Honnamma Student Scholarship

This scholarship began in the year 2003-2004 for meritorious girl students so as to encourage them to pursue higher education. This is specifically meant for girl students who have scored high marks in II year PUC.
• Every year the students availing the scholarship shall get an amount of Rs. 2000/-.
• To avail this scholarship, students should complete their course in one attempt and only those students will be given this scholarship till the completion of their Graduate Course.
• In the year 2013-2014, the government released Rs. 121 lakhs towards this scholarship. Out of this Rs. 60 lakhs was reserved under SCP/TSP plan for girls belonging to SC/ST category.

Sir C.V. Raman Student Scholarship

This scholarship was launched in the year 2001-2002. This scholarship focused on encouraging students studying in science stream. It is meant for talented and meritorious students who are pursuing their education in basic sciences in government and private aided degree colleges.
To avail the scholarship the conditions laid down are as follows:
• The student should have passed with high marks in their II Year PUC examination.
• While taking up B.Sc. course, they should have taken two subjects as basic science.
• This scholarship shall be extended to the students who should have passed the semester examination in one attempt.Every year the meritorious student shall receive a scholarship amount of Rs. 5000/-. In the year 2013-14 the government released Rs. 97 lakhs for this scholarship. Out of this, Rs. 39 lakhs was reserved under SCP/TSP plan for students belonging to the SC/ST category

Kittur Rani Channamma Award

This scheme began in the year 2006-07. It was meant to encourage girl students, who have finished their studies in the II PUC, pursuing their higher education through CET examination by taking up vocational courses. If the students fulfill the criteria mentioned below, the government shall repay the amount paid by the student. For this award from every district, 10 girl students are selected by a committee headed by the District Commissioner. They shall get the award till they complete the course provided they clear the course in one attempt.
The eligibility criteria for this scheme is as follows.
• This scheme is meant for girl students only.
• The students should belong to the below poverty line.
• They should have scored high marks in II PUC.
In the year 2013-14, Rs. 65 lakhs was released by the government for this scheme. Out of this Rs. 23 lakhs was reserved under SCP/TSP plan for girl students belonging to the SC/ST category.
